Gek Maha Ask: Bapak, Why we need go to school?

Why Do We Need to Go to School?

A question from my daughter that made me rethink everything

One day, my daughter Gek Maha looked at me with complete seriousness and asked:

“Bapak… why do we need to go to school?”

It was a simple question. But like many simple questions from children, it carried a depth that quietly stops time.

I have many roles in life. I run businesses, manage teams, build ideas, and make decisions every day that affect many people.

But at that moment — none of that mattered.

I was just a father… being asked to explain life.

The Answer That First Came to My Mind

The obvious answers were easy:

  • To get knowledge
  • To be smart
  • To get a good job
  • To have a better future

But when I looked into her eyes, I realized something uncomfortable:

Those answers were not enough. And maybe… not even fully true.

Because I know many successful people who did not follow perfect school paths. I know highly educated people who still struggle to find direction. And I know that some of the most important lessons in my own life did not come from classrooms.

What School Actually Teaches (Beyond Books)

After thinking deeply, I gave her a different answer:

You don’t go to school only to learn math, reading, or science.
You go to school to learn how to live with other people.

School is the first place where a child learns that the world is bigger than home.

School Is a Life Simulation

There are rules, differences, challenges, and people who think differently. There are things you like… and things you don’t.

School is not just academic training. It is life simulation.

It Builds Character Through Small Daily Moments

School teaches you things that may not appear on any report card:

  • How to wait your turn
  • How to listen even when you disagree
  • How to try again after failure
  • How to finish something you don’t enjoy
  • How to solve problems without your parents
  • How to be responsible even when no one watches

These are not subjects. These are survival skills for adulthood.

The Deeper Truth I Told My Daughter

Then I told her something even more important:

School doesn’t give you all the answers.
It teaches you how to look for answers.

Because life will always ask harder questions than exams.

Life Questions Are Harder Than Exams

  • What kind of person do you want to become?
  • What do you do when things don’t go your way?
  • How do you treat people when you have power?
  • How do you keep learning when no one tells you to?

Education is not about memorizing information. It is about building the ability to learn forever.

The Lesson I Learned as a Father

That question also reminded me of something about parenting:

Children Need Meaning, Not Only Instructions

If we only tell them what to do, they obey. If we help them understand why, they grow.

And maybe that is the real education — not only for children, but for us as parents too.

My Final Answer to Her

So I looked at her and said:

“You go to school to grow — not just your mind, but your character.
You go to school to learn how to learn.
And one day… you will learn many important things outside school too.”

She nodded. Then she asked something else:

“Do you still go to school, Bapak?”

I smiled.

“Yes. Every day. Life is my school now.”

What I Believe Today

Education does not stop at graduation. Learning does not belong only to classrooms. And wisdom does not come only from teachers.

But school gives us the first structure, the first discipline, the first exposure to the world beyond ourselves.

School Is Not the Destination

It is not the destination. It is the training ground.

A Quiet Realization

That day, my daughter asked why she needed school.

But the real question was different:

Am I still learning the way I want her to learn?

Because children don’t follow our words. They follow our example.

And if I want her to love learning… I must keep learning too.

Always.
